NEET eligibility is the starting point for every medical aspirant. Before investing time and money in preparation, you must confirm that you meet the basic requirements set by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and implemented by NTA. Gaps or misconceptions at the eligibility stage can cost you an entire academic year.

This article covers all eligibility dimensions for NEET UG 2025: academic qualifications, subject requirements, category-wise marks thresholds, age rules, and special category provisions. It is based on the NMC Undergraduate Medical Education Regulations and NTA’s annual NEET information bulletins.

At Suresh Dani’s Classes, we begin eligibility counselling for students from Class 11 itself, helping them make subject choices and score targets that align with their medical admission goals. Early clarity prevents last-minute eligibility surprises.

1. Overview of NEET Eligibility

NEET UG eligibility is defined by four parameters:

  • Nationality: Indian nationals, NRIs, OCIs, PIOs, and foreign nationals are all eligible.
  • Age: Minimum 17 years by 31 December of the year of admission. No upper age limit.
  • Academic qualification: Passed or appearing in Class 12 or equivalent with PCB as core subjects.
  • Minimum marks: Category-dependent percentage in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in Class 12.

Meeting all four conditions is necessary. Meeting one or two but not all does not qualify you to register for NEET. The most common pitfall is students who have the right subjects and age but fall short on minimum marks in Class 12.

2. Nationality and Citizenship Requirements

Indian citizens are eligible without any additional documentation for nationality. NRIs must produce their passport and proof of NRI status. OCI cardholders must provide the OCI card. PIOs must provide the PIO card. Foreign nationals must produce a valid passport, and their NEET score may only be used for NRI/Management quota seats, not All India Quota seats through MCC counselling.

3. Age Requirement

The minimum age is 17 years, to be completed on or before 31 December of the year of admission. There is no upper age limit following the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling. The date of birth in the Class 10 marksheet is the primary document; Aadhaar and other documents are supplementary.

For full details on age limit and attempts, see our dedicated guide: NEET Age Limit and Number of Attempts.

4. Academic Qualifications: Class 12 Requirements

The educational qualification for NEET is: passed or appearing in the final year of the 10+2 system or equivalent from a recognised board with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as compulsory subjects.

Recognised boards include CBSE, all state boards, ICSE, NIOS, and international equivalents such as IB and Cambridge A-Levels. Students from state boards do not need to convert their marks to a different format; the NEET registration portal accepts all recognised board certificates.

💡

Students from the Maharashtra state board who studied the Maharashtra HSC curriculum are fully eligible for NEET. The Maharashtra board is a recognised board under NMC guidelines. However, certain chapters in Maharashtra HSC Biology differ from the NCERT syllabus, so NEET aspirants must study NCERT Biology alongside their board curriculum.

5. Minimum Marks Requirement by Category

The minimum marks in Class 12 refer to the aggregate percentage in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (not including other subjects like Mathematics or English in the average). The thresholds by category are:

Category Minimum % in PCB (Class 12) NEET Qualifying Percentile
General / EWS 50% 50th percentile
OBC (NCL) 40% 40th percentile
SC 40% 40th percentile
ST 40% 40th percentile
PwD — General 45% 45th percentile
PwD — OBC/SC/ST 40% 40th percentile

Important distinction: Class 12 minimum marks (50%/40%/45%) and NEET qualifying marks (based on percentile) are two separate criteria. Clearing one does not guarantee clearing the other. Both must be met for admission.

6. NEET Qualifying Percentile vs Cutoff Marks

The qualifying percentile is the minimum NEET score required to be declared as having passed or qualified the exam. It does not guarantee a seat in any college. The actual marks corresponding to the 50th percentile vary each year based on how difficult the paper was. In easier years, the General category qualifying marks might be 137 or above; in harder years, it could be lower.

Qualifying NEET is a necessary but not sufficient condition for admission. After qualifying, you must participate in NEET UG counselling and secure a rank competitive enough for the college and course you want.

7. Compulsory Subjects in Class 12

Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (or Biotechnology) must be core subjects, meaning they must appear on your Class 12 marksheet as subjects you studied and were examined in. The following arrangements are acceptable:

  • PCB with Mathematics as additional: Fully eligible. Many engineering-aspiring students also study Biology to keep NEET open.
  • PCB without Mathematics: Fully eligible. No Mathematics requirement for NEET.
  • PCBi (Biotechnology instead of Biology): Eligible, but NEET paper tests standard Biology, so Biotechnology students must self-study the Biology syllabus.
  • Biology as additional subject (not core): Not eligible. Biology must be a main subject, not an add-on after board exams.

English is required as a compulsory subject but the minimum marks threshold applies only to PCB. English marks do not factor into the 50%/40% eligibility calculation.

8. Provisional Candidates Appearing in Class 12

Students who are in their final year of Class 12 and whose results have not yet been declared at the time of NEET registration can apply provisionally. This is common for students who write NEET in May while their board results come in June. They must:

  • Indicate on the NEET form that they are appearing in Class 12 final exam.
  • Produce the provisional pass certificate or marksheet at the time of NEET UG counselling.
  • Ensure they achieve the required minimum percentage in PCB once results are declared.

If the Class 12 result is unsatisfactory (below 50% for General or 40% for reserved categories), the NEET score for that year cannot be used for admission even if the student scored well in NEET. This is a common source of disappointment for students who do not take board exams seriously.

9. Special Categories: NRI, OCI, PIO, Foreign Nationals

Non-Resident Indians (NRI), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), and foreign nationals may appear for NEET under the same eligibility conditions as Indian nationals. The minimum age, subject requirements, and minimum marks criteria are the same.

However, their counselling process differs. NRI candidates may compete for NRI quota seats in private medical colleges. Foreign nationals are generally restricted to NRI/Management quota seats and cannot participate in the All India Quota counselling through MCC. For more details, see our guide on MCC Counselling for All India Quota Seats.

10. Building Eligibility Strength at Suresh Dani’s Classes

Meeting eligibility on paper is the floor, not the ceiling. To actually secure a government MBBS seat, a General category candidate needs a NEET score well above 620 in the current competitive environment. This means not just passing Class 12 with 50%, but excelling in the NEET syllabus with consistent practice.

Our 11th and 12th Science integrated programme ensures students build a strong NCERT foundation while also scoring well in Maharashtra HSC boards. Our NEET coaching programme then builds the speed, accuracy, and revision depth needed to compete at the highest level.

Students who join us from Class 11 have a significant advantage because their board preparation and NEET preparation are aligned from the start. Our faculty ensures that no chapter in the NCERT syllabus is left uncovered before the exam.
